Three Basic Choices All Humans Face in Life

Having survived not only severe childhood trauma, but the treatment to heal from it, I have spent a great deal of time on self-reflection. One of the ways I accomplish this is by surfing the internet looking for inspirational sayings that build up my understanding and help me cope. On one recent research, I found the following statement:

You have three choices in life,

Give up

Give in

Give it all you’ve got

I Was Taken Aback by These Four Sentences

I was taken aback by the simplicity of these four sentences, and how true they are in regards of achieving stability and living well in the face of having the aftereffects of childhood trauma, or living with any mental health condition.

Words of Wisdom from My Therapist

I remember well the day my therapist said almost these same words to me. I was sitting in her office bemoaning my life, and sitting in a puddle of self-pity. She had listened to me for many weeks, speaking on the same subject and not accepting any of her offers of how to change my circumstances. Finally, she stopped me in mid-sentence and stated,

“Shirley, you had it hard as a child. Okay. Now what will you do with your life? It was the fault of the people who hurt you then, who is harming you now? You have two choices, fight to get well and win, or allow the bastards to win. Do you want the bastards to win?”

I Was Stunned To Silence

I sat stunned in silence after she spoke. I was not only shocked that this small, very prim, and professional woman had spoken like this to me, but by the words she had said.

The thought that I would be allowing the people who had harmed me continue to do so, and that they would win lit a slow burning fire in my heart. This little fire eventually grew to become a huge raging fire that has propelled me forward to this day.

Everyone Has the Same Choices to Make

Everyone, regardless of who they are, or where they have been, face the same three choices.

You can give up fighting and lose the war, allowing your past to run your life forever.

You can give in and die on the battlefield, allowing the people who harmed you to win the war they have waged against your soul.

You can give it all you’ve got, pushing on, fighting hard, and emerge victorious. Hell, even if you die trying, you win!

No One is Special or Weird

Don’t let anyone tell you that you are special, or that you are weird because you have struggles and face the three decisions, because this isn’t something that is only for people who struggle with mental illness

It is a basic human battle.

“Courage doesn’t always roar, sometimes it’s the quiet voice at the end of the day whispering ‘I will try again tomorrow”  Mary Anne Radmacher
